Location: Stranger Things


Information about the location of Stranger Things- 26/3/2020
The Duffer brothers wanted the location of Stranger Things to be at the coast like Jaws but they couldn't because of production logistics. Jaws is set in a town called Amity. 
If Amity was a saying ' this place is desperate; we need to stay open despite the several deaths courtesy of a massive shark'... what is Hawkins saying?
Hawkins ' There are good guys and bad guys here and whole load of mystery. There is a good sense of community but also a lot of secrecy. This place looks friendly but is in fact the opposite.'

Summary of article
  • There are ideas from culture that villages are safer than cities but this is not always true. 
  • Many Gothic stories are set in little villages which first appear nice but then are revealed as having evil features which surprises us as our culture makes us believe that small villages are friendly and safe.
  • Two horror films from the 1980s 'Halloween' and 'Nightmare on Elm Street' both show un-neighbourly communities. This is contrasting to other things happening at a similar time such as Ronald Reagan's presidential re-election campaign being shot in a perfect looking village showing how life in communities is great. 
  • Eleven is shown to be a present day creation from a present day understanding of what women are capable of.
  • Stranger Things shows lots of elements of American towns that aren't perfect. 
My version of the article

Stranger Things along with Gothic literature causes us to question our beliefs about small American villages as culture has us to believe that these villages are perfect and innocent whereas this media and literature shows it to be the opposite.There are some creations in media which build upon our ideologies of these perfect villages to enhance their media products whilst others cause use to challenge these ideologies.

Intertextuality- Burn The Witch- 03/03

 Intertextuality in Burn the Witch Radiohead are well known for using intertextuality within their videos.  Trumpton used to create the Village to appear as a perfect English Village. Represents Middle England- white, middle class place. Trumpton was teaching children community values. The creator said that there was no trouble in Trumpton- very unrealistic. Shows a mythical small town with views often shared by the Right Wing party.  The Wickerman 1973- used to show the darker sides to society and reflects the us vs them mindset. During the film the villagers think that they need to make a sacrifice for their crops to grow but the policeman is trying to tell them that it is due to the weather but the villagers won't listen.
