Feminist Theory- van Zoonen
Key Ideas:
Key Ideas:
- We get our ideas about gender from the media- we see what it means to be masculine or feminine from what we see in the media.
- Our ideas about gender depend on the historical and cultural context e.g what it is like to be masculine in the 1950s is different to what is believed in 2020.
- Women are objectified in the media.
- We live in a patriarchal society dominated by men.
- Women and men are presented very differently in the media. Women are seen as domestic, emotional, dependant upon the man whereas men are seen as 'bread-winners', professional and independent.
- Men and women's bodies are represented in different ways. Men: bodies that should be admired as it is something they have worked hard for. Women: something that we want to buy, have or take.
