Stranger Things Audience

Audience of Stranger Things

I think that a mixture of each social grade will watch Stranger Things as it is poly-generic so has elements to entertain everyone. I think that people of a higher social grade may enjoy the show more as it contains elements of super-natural and complex concepts which they may enjoy since they have a higher qualification level.

I think that the Young and Rubicam audience profile which will enjoy Stranger Things the most is 'the explorer' as they seek discovery and enjoy new things and Stranger Things features a lot of discovery and supernatural elements. Another audience profile in which I think will enjoy Stranger Things is 'the mainstreamer' as ST features a lot of intertextual references and 'the mainstreamer' likes tried and trusted things so by Stranger Things having elements which have been done before they will know it will be good.

Uses and gratification. Identity- Teenagers may be able to discover who they are and what it means to be a teenager by comparing themselves to the teenagers in ST; they may be able to compare their love for supernatural, science, friendships, relationships. Relationships- The audience will get to know the characters well and may develop a bond with them. They will be able to see the friendships and relationships between the characters and these may then influence their own. Diversion- Can binge watch the series as only 8 episodes long. Surveillance- gain information about MK Ultra as is based from this.

I think that people aged 15-50 will enjoy ST. An older audience will feel nostalgia with the show as they will have lived through the 1980s so should enjoy seeing this period of time being shown and will also be able to understand the intertextual references to other films from the 1980s so will enjoy this. I think teenagers-young adults will enjoy watching ST as the main characters are teenagers so this age group might be able to relate elements of their lives to the characters and enjoy watching people their age.

    Nostalgia Marketing

Stranger Things contains a lot of nostalgia for people who were around in the 1980s. A study conducted by the Journal of Consumer Research discovered that people spend more money when they're feeling nostalgic. Because of this, a lot of brands are engaging in 'nostalgia marketing'.

    'Millennial Pull'

The millennial generation ( people reaching young adulthood in the early 21st century) now represent a quarter of the US population. This group annually buy more than $200 billion of products and services yet it is one of the most difficult generations for marketers to figure out. Stranger Things features a lot of nostalgia but has fresh storytelling.
