Semiology: Roland Barthes
Semiology = study of signs.
Signs = a word, image, sound
Denotation = literal meaning
Connotations =  thoughts and feelings associated with the denotation. Its the deeper meaning.
Symbolic codes = Images that symbolise something such as a red heart symbolises love.
Semantic codes = Have hidden meanings such as red and black are associated with horror.
Proairetic codes = signifies something is going to happen e.g A man pulling a gun out of a pocket shows that the man is going to kill someone.
Enigma codes = mysterious parts of media which makes people want to read or watch on e.g  A newspaper cover featuring the phrase 'Read on to find out what this means for us'
Cultural code = parts of media that you are only going to understand if you are part of that culture

Explain how popular music radio programmes target, reach and maintain a variety of audiences. Refer to The BBC Radio One Breakfast Show to support your answer. [15] It is increasingly harder for popular music radio programmes to target, reach and maintain a variety of audiences due to changes in audience wants and needs. A RAJAR survey for the first quarter of 2020 showed that the 3 most popular commercial radio stations suffered a decrease in listeners which may be due to new digital streaming services which are strong competitors to radio stations. Commercial stations such as Smooth, Heart and Capital (owned by Global) will be affected by not being able to maintain an audience as they need high listening figures in order to have advertisers want to advertise on their station and generate money. Intertextuality- Burn The Witch- 03/03

 Intertextuality in Burn the Witch Radiohead are well known for using intertextuality within their videos.  Trumpton used to create the Village to appear as a perfect English Village. Represents Middle England- white, middle class place. Trumpton was teaching children community values. The creator said that there was no trouble in Trumpton- very unrealistic. Shows a mythical small town with views often shared by the Right Wing party.  The Wickerman 1973- used to show the darker sides to society and reflects the us vs them mindset. During the film the villagers think that they need to make a sacrifice for their crops to grow but the policeman is trying to tell them that it is due to the weather but the villagers won't listen.
